Are Smart Glasses Ready to Replace Your Everyday Glasses?

October 2026

Darren’s honest perspective after SILMO Paris 2026

Smart glasses are becoming far more wearable. They can take photos, play music, manage calls, offer voice assistance and, in some models, display information directly in front of you.

After attending SILMO Paris 2026, Darren was impressed by how quickly the technology is progressing. But the honest answer is that smart glasses are not yet a direct replacement for a well fitted pair of everyday prescription glasses.

What can smart glasses do?

Depending on the model, smart glasses may include cameras, microphones, speakers, voice control and AI assistance. They can be useful for travel, hands free calls, listening to audio or capturing moments without reaching for your phone.

Some models can also be made with prescription lenses. However, suitability still depends on the frame, prescription and lens requirements. People with stronger prescriptions, astigmatism, prism correction or multifocal needs may have fewer options.meta+3

Where everyday glasses still win

Your everyday glasses have one essential job: to give you clear, comfortable vision all day.

That may mean seeing clearly while driving, reading, working on a screen or moving between different distances. A well chosen frame and prescription lenses can be tailored to your face, visual needs and lifestyle.

Smart glasses are improving, but they still come with limits around lens availability, battery life, fit, frame selection and prescription complexity. They are often designed around the technology first. Traditional prescription glasses can be designed around you.

Our honest view

Smart glasses may be a great second pair for someone who loves new technology, travels often or wants hands free features during the day.

For most people, though, they are not ready to replace everyday eyewear. Clear vision, comfortable fit and lenses tailored to your life still matter more than novelty.

SILMO Paris showed us that the future of eyewear is becoming more connected. The best developments will be the ones that bring technology, great vision and great design together.
